Beauty Basics with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian: Hidef Stretch Mark Treatments

You can try as hard as you want to hide your stretch marks, but mark my words... there’s going to come a time in your life when you have to fit your body into a tight two piece bikini and guess what?... there’s going to be no way to hide those pesky stretch marks in the hot, blazing sun.

It’s no exaggeration to say that stretch marks are the worst! Even women with the most incredible bodies have stretch marks. Yes, it’s true... whether you are tall or short; skinny or overweight, chances are that you have stretch marks on at least one area of your body.

Having said that, we took the opportunity to talk to Santa Monica plastic surgeon and skin expert Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian about the newest treatments to reduce stretch marks.

In his bespoke plastic surgery office in Santa Monica Beach, Dr. Karamanoukian specializes in Hidef body sculpting and skin rejuvenation. In recent years, he developed the Brazilian Cellulite Treatment to eliminate unwanted cellulite deposits and Hidef body sculpting to optimize body proportions in women.

Beauty Basics with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian

BEAUTY EDITER: Are all stretch marks the same?

DR. KARAMANOUKIAN: As clinicians, we like to first distinguish between new and old stretch marks. Newer stretch marks are usually pink to red, while older stretch usually have a loss of skin tone and are hypopigmented. Depending on how deep the stretch marks are within the dermis, there may be associated atrophy, or loss of deep collagen.

BEAUTY EDITER: What new treatments are there for stretch marks?

DR. KARAMANOUKIAN: For years, plastic surgeons turned to surgery to improve stretch marks on the abdomen, hips, thighs, and breasts. With the advent of newer laser and RF treatments, we can now modulate stretch marks so that the skin is firmer and the stretch marks less visible.

BEAUTY EDITER: Will lasers replace surgery for stretch marks?

DR. KARAMANOUKIAN: In many cases, lasers and RF can replace surgery to correct loose skin and stretch marks. In our center, we have a Hidef Stretch Mark Protocol that is ideal for women who have had children and now have loose skin and stretch marks. In this technique, we use a combination platform that includes fractional laser resurfacing, non-ablative lasers, fractional RF, sublation, ultrasound, and thermal tissue tightening to improve skin tone and resiliency. Patients who would have opted for surgery a decade ago can now have a Hidef physique without surgery and downtime.

BEAUTY EDITER: How much downtime do the treatments require?

DR. KARAMANOUKIAN: Lasers have improved dramatically. With our Hidef Stretch Mark Protocol, many of the lasers have little to no downtime. Patients can resume their normal work and exercise regimens immediately after surgery.

BEAUTY EDITER: Do you recommend stretch mark treatments as part of a mommy makeover?

DR. KARAMANOUKIAN: Mommy makeovers refer to a series of breast and body sculpting procedures to restore harmony to the body after pregnancy and childbirth. The female body can change dramatically after pregnancy, and our Hidef body sculpting protocols can integrate breast surgery, body sculpting, and liposuction, with Hidef Stretch mark and cellulite treatments to tighten, firm, and restore female confidence.
